I'm looking at buying a new desktop for gaming purposes. When looking at processors, I get confused. I understand the Ghz speed stuff but when it comes to i3 - i7, xeon, core duo, and all the anthion cores is where I get lost. I understand i7 is better than i5 which is better than i3, but is i3 just a new name for the core duo stuff, and how does all that compare to the anthion stuff. And how does anthion compare to intel chips? so confused. please help. we can talk about it in vent if it would be easier to explain.

I prefer intel to athlon, so after I give you what I know, Mena can tout amd to you. Core 2 Duo is intel's second gen dual core CPU. I3 is a quad core, i5 is 6, and i7 is 8. The more CPUs, the more tasks a computer can perform at once. At present, anything on the market past a dual core is overkill, as no game in existence yet takes advantage of more than 2 CPUs. That said, if I were starting a machine today, I would go for the I7. It will have the longest gaming life span of anything on the market. I believe the AMD version of this is an 8 core Phenom. Now, if you're doing this on a budget, I would look more into the high end dual core machines. They are pretty reasonably priced used, and like I said, no games at present use more than a dual core anyways. Hope that helps a little. Mena can fill in the blanks, and correct my mistakes. Never heard of them to be honest. ibuypower.com is pretty common for getting gaming machines, although their prices might be a little higher than what you are wanting to spend.
