Here are some mods that I find useful:

Raids

Omen is a must. It allows you to track and manage threat. Everyone needs to use this mod if you are raiding or running instances. It loses some utility if everyone is not using this.

Bigwig is great. See Solstar’s post for a list of features. I like getting the cooldowns and other information it provides. Littlewigs is a good addition to this because it adds information for the bosses in all the Outlands’ instances.

Decursive is another must if you have those abilities. As a healer I don’t always have time to decurse someone but this mod makes it much easier to do it when I can.

Other mods

I use Atlas loot, Cartographer and MapCoords. They provide lots of good information. I really like Itemrack. It allows me to switch quickly between sets of gear.

I cannot say enough good things about gatherer. This tracks all my mining and herbalism nodes. I use gathersync to send the data to guild-mates. Auctioneer and its addon are great as well. Scanning the auction house takes much less time now. I scan daily so I always know how to price my auction items.

Guildgreet extended is great for me. It’s not completely compatible with 2.3 so I have to disable it before accessing the guild control functions. This provides me with a pop-up telling me when guild-members log on; when they level or have been promoted. It connects alts to mains because I can’t remember who everyone’s alt is some days. It can be set to send greetings automatically but I don’t use it that way. It is especially valuable to me when I’m in an instance and may miss someone logging on.

Some of the mods I use that aren’t already listed.

Fubar 2.0 – Adds a bar to the top and bottom of your screen to add mods to. I suggest downloading one or more of the packages offered at curse. Then just play around with what you don’t use (I have no use for the soulstone one)
In one of the packages comes a mod called LightHead which is great. It keeps me from having to window out to look up cords. It’s powered by WowHead.

Bongos2 allows me to redo my buttons and UI. Still playing with this one. I like it so far.

I use a couple of RP mods, FlagRSP and MyRoleplay. I’ve heard they aren’t compatible but I haven’t had any trouble running both. You can add surnames and titles and other background stuff.

I do not even know where to begin with my mods. I use many, many mods. Some of my favorites include:

Auctioneer: essential if you want to make money. It is a complex data mining mod that keeps track of average AH prices for items among other things.

Omen: a threat meter. Threat meters have become almost necessary for raids. Otherwise it is too easy to pull aggro from a tank which will usually spell disaster. I have tried Omen and KTM and Omen is much better imo.

Damagemeters: a damage meter. Damage meters are mixed blessings. They are handy for keeping track of roughly how much damage, healing, etc the various party members are doing. This is a somewhat misleading scale to use though since they do not reflect contributions via CC, buffs, and other forms of class utility. Also, damage meters often lead to dps races in which dps classes pay less attention to aggro (which is more important) and more attention to dps. Many raiding guild discourage dps meters to be used during raids for this reason.

Fubar: a mod to organize other mods. Contains a host of sub-mods that can do things ranging from displaying the date and time (clockfu), total armor damage and cost to repair (durabilityfu), and a number of other handy features.

Metahud: An interface mod that provides a fair amount of tactical information on screen, including casting bars, mob and player info, distances, and probably a bunch of other stuff Im so used to that it has become transparent for me.

Gatherer: a mod that keeps track of randomly generating nodes (herbs, mines, treasures, crates, etc). If you are a miner or an herbalist especially this mod or a similar one is extremely useful for locating your nodes.

Gemlist: a data mining mod that lets players whisper me to bring up a list of gems I can cut. I understand that there are similar mods for other professions though I have never used them.

the newest mod i use is Xpearl it repaces the Party and raid frames, similar to CT-Raid but its Ace 2 so is lightweight and far more customizable. Ive been using it a week now and its great. Lets u move all party and raid frames. i like to have my party frames lower on the screen. Ill put up a screenshot later.
X-Pearl at Curse

Gatherer, Omen, and atlas is what I need and use atm. I dont see any other mod I would find useful unless I can find a mod that allows me to see who grabbed aggro from me lol I hate running all over and not knowing where a mob is going.

I like how that one looks. I forgot to mention that I use CT raid but I'm not a huge fan I just don't have anything better. I need to clean out my mods a bit. Lots of clutter.

Yeah Gom get Omen. It is so useful for a tank. I had no idea what was going on with KTM half the time. Omen is intuitive and tells you when the sh%t hits the fan when you are not able to read a series of numbers on a bar to the side (screen flashes red and it makes a noise by default).

I must say that I really like X-pearl. I never used CT-raid assist so I can't compare the two. I like being able to configure it so that I can see how many HP each party member is below max so I know which heal to cast. I also have it set so that a party member's portrait dims if they are out of range. I can tell at a glance who is within range of my heals. I also like seeing the target of all party members. It allows me to see the tank's target without selecting the tank. It also allows me to know who is attacking the target attacking me so that I know if I have to respond or continue to heal.

Note: The new version seems to have a bug or two that was reported tho i have not had any problem with the mod. I still highly suggest this mod.

I did some arenas yesterday and they were using a mod called Arena Frame (I'll get the exact name when I get home.) When anyone with the mod mouses over an opponent in an arena it adds them to a frame showing class, health and mana. I found it extremely useful. We were 4-6 by the way in my first experience with 5v5 arenas.

If I may add one or two -

Dr. Damage, in my opinion no other mod even comes CLOSE to how useful this mod is.

What it does - basically it calculates an ability's numerical value based on gear, buffs, target debuffs etc - and displays that number on your action ability bar.

If you add Enhanced Tooltip, Equip Compare and...another (I forgot) you get even more info, such as %hit, average dmg range, Mana Consumption, Dmg/Heals until OOM, etc.

Very powerful, here is a screen shot of a recent guild venture -

Ok, I am now 80, and I want to start raiding. It takes me awhile to get used to addons, so I want to get them now. The problem is I only have a laptop, and I have minimal room. I do have a 1TB external hard drive. If I knew what I could do to it and how, I could use that.
Here's the question. What do I HAVE to have, and what SHOULD I have?

Deadly Boss Mods is a must.

Omen is nice if you worry about threat, but is less crucial right now, especially as a new 80. Threat shouldn't be an issue until you start getting good gear.

I'm not sure if there are any hunter specific addons to help rotations or damage.
Jeina - 85 Blood Elf Rogue
Kalenthos - 85 Tauren Druid
Kalentho - 85 Tauren Shaman
Jeinathil - 85 Blood Elf Death Knight
Cynisa - 85 Blood Elf Mage
Yerina - 85 Troll Hunter
Jeinixia - 85 Goblin Warrior
Silythi - 82 Goblin Priest

I know that WoW can run from an external drive.

Ventrilo is a must. Even if you don't have a mike you need to be able to listen.
